Round 1 - It was pretty breezy on the opening day but, with perfect greens and relatively straightforward pins, the potential was there for an enjoyable round. Les Souter is still trying to find his A-game and the signs were good on the front nine. However, the back nine only yielded two bogeys, leaving him with a paltry score of just one point. Ian McKinley enjoyed a bogey-free round, but a small haul of three birds meant he only scored six points today. Charlie Roberts had what he described as "a pedestrian round" which was spoiled by a solitary bogey, but his five birdies earned him an opening score of nine points. Bob Fletcher has changed his pre-tourney preparation and it seemed to work today. He struck the ball well and was rewarded with seven birds, but on the downside he also carded three bogeys. He was pleased with his eleven-point score though, and sits just four points behind the leading group...
Round 2 - Less wind today but much faster greens, so good scoring was a distinct possibility. Les Souter looked to have found his best game when he birdied five of the first seven holes, but inexplicably from the 9th hole he dropped points on five consecutive holes. A late birdie on #17 was small consolation for that damaging run and his eventual score for the round was five points, still an improvement on his opening round tally. Bob Fletcher had problems with the pace of the putting surfaces and a disappointing total of minus one saw him drop down the leaderboard. Ian McKinley finished this round but his score is yet to be confirmed.
Round 3 - We had blustery winds today but the greens had lost some of their pace. The course was manageable but any points total above zero was good. Ian McKinley fell foul of the conditions and after registering a triple-bogey on #2, followed by doubles on #15 and #16, a soul-destroying tally of minus seven was his end result. It looked pretty good for Charlie Roberts after his points total at the turn was four but, after losing his focus and timing, Charlie dropped points on no less than seven of the nine inward holes to finish up with minus three, leaving him level with Ian. Bob Fletcher was really pleased with his performance today, carding three birdies for six points and dropping only one point, that occurring on #18 when it was looking like he was going to achieve a clean round. Les Souter had a great start with four birdies, and a rare eagle 2 on #15 helped him amass a score of thirteen on the day, and nineteen for the tourney.
Round 4 - We still had strong winds which meant getting close to today's difficult pin positions would be challenging. Randy Grant's two birdies were more than offset by five bogeys for a score of minus one, not bad in the conditions but not good enough to lift him off the foot of the leaderboard. Bob Fletcher's good form deserted him and he concluded the tourney with a disappointing score of minus four today, putting being his main problem. That left him level with Ian McKinley whose five birds enabled him to score a creditable four points today. Charlie Roberts ended the event well, just as he'd started it, it was just the middle two rounds that let him down. A strong finish with four birdies in the last six holes rewarded Charlie with a haul of 8 points and a share of 46th place. Les Souter was the best guest of the week, even though he scored minus one today, signing off in 38th spot. Another winless week for the guests - maybe the sequence will be broken in next week's Buick Open...
