Round 3 - The wind dropped to little more than a gentle breeze today which meant that, in theory anyway, we might see a lot more birdies on the scorecards. Unfortunately for the guests things didn't quite pan out like that, mainly due to more unexpectedly difficult pin placements. Rich Urban and, surprisingly, Charlie Roberts suffered the most, when they both came in with a 77. Mark Lipping also faltered, carding a 75, while Bob Fletcher produced an almost respectable 72. Hans Kunok enjoyed his best round of the event, shooting a 71, and Ian McKinley sneaked under par by negotiating this devilish track in 69 strokes, also his best effort of the tourney. At the end of the day it saw the guests occupying 6 of the bottom 7 positions, and I think everyone will be relieved when this is all over and we head for the mainland...

Round 4 - The pins today were the most accessible of the week, and although the wind had risen slightly today looked the most likely to post a decent score. It was way too late for any of the guests to hope for a good finishing position, so it was a fight for 'the scraps' and trying to win enough cash to cover travelling expenses. Hans Kunok concluded a miserable week by carding a 73, thereby becoming the only guest not to break par in any round. Bob Fletcher, Mark Lipping and Rich Urban all regained some credibility by shooting 69's, while Ian McKinley enjoyed his best day of the week, posting a hard-fought 68. Les Souter also impressed by recording his best score of the tourney, a very good 66, and it won't be long before he's challenging for titles. After his disastrous third round it was business as usual for Charlie Roberts, winner at Kapalua last week, and his super 65 was the equal best round of the day and meant he ended the tourney at level par, no mean feat at this course. However, the best guest performance this week came from Randy Grant, whose 67 today lifted him into a tie for 22nd. The eventual winner, by a massive 7 strokes, was Paul Azinger who led from start to finish in what was a very impressive performance. Waialae provided a tougher challenge than expected, it really is a bear of a course, but now we return to the mainland to take on another one - PGA West, but be encouraged because the conditions are expected to be a lot more friendly...
