The first tournament of the 2000 season will be the Mercedes Championships in Hawaii, which is open only to winners of the 47 official events from the 1999 season. But thanks to Tiger Woods and David Duval combining for a dozen wins, only 31 players qualified for this season-opener. They are all here, with the exception of Jose Maria Olazabal, who usually doesn't play this early in the year.
Duval should be anxious to get things started. He dominated at Kapalua last year, finishing at a tournament-record 26-under and winning by nine strokes, the largest margin of victory by anybody during 1999. His tournament included a 10-under 63 on Friday, distancing himself from the field for a cakewalk on the weekend.
Woods should also be ready to get the 2000 season started. He finished 1999 with four consecutive victories, the best streak since Ben Hogan in 1953. Kapalua gives him a shot at five in a row.
While the Mercedes usually features the elite players on tour, that won't be the case this year. Davis Love III, Phil Mickelson, Tom Lehman, Justin Leonard, Fred Couples and Mark O'Meara are just some of the big names who failed to win in 1999.
WILL YOU TRY TO TAME THE TIGER?!
