Round 1 - As is traditional with this Major, the course played tough and the conditions were tough also. Only 2 players managed to break par today - Tony Jacklin and guest player Mark Lipping, fresh from another tourney win last week and almost back to his best form. Mark's opening 68 left him three strokes clear and he will be the player to beat it seems. Bob Fletcher was unable to reproduce his recent good form but his 75 saw him sharing 9th spot, so not completely out of it just yet...

Round 2 - A couple of late starters from the opening round now feature at the business end of the leaderboard after Day 2. Ian McKinley battled through his health issues and post-op trauma to card a mistake-ridden 80 and then a sterling 68 to lie 8 strokes off the pace. Roger Instell is one shot ahead of Ian after shooting a 71 and a 76, and he shares 7th place with a couple of PGA pro's and also Bob Fletcher, who improved on his first round score by recording a 72 today. Opening day leader Mark Lipping also hit a 72 but his lead has been reduced to a single stroke due to Tony Jacklin's 70. Tensions will mount over the weekend as the event reaches a climax, but who will hold their nerve and leave Hazeltine with the US Open trophy?!

Round 3 - The slick, bone-hard greens caused a few problems today, especially for Bob Fletcher who shot a catastrophic 83, and Roger Instell who didn't do much better with an 81, so effectively those two are out of contention going into the final round. Ian McKinley played well for his 71 to take him into a tie for 6th, but with eight strokes to make up on the co-leaders it looks like any winning hopes he may have had have all but disappeared. Overnight leader Mark Lipping also carded a 71, but he now shares the lead with Tony Jacklin due to the latter's 70, the joint best round of the day and an indication of how difficult it was to score in this round. So it all comes down to the final round...

Round 4 - There was a close finish today, but first the news about the also-rans. Roger Instell signed off with a 91 - enough said. Bob Fletcher had to battle for a 77 and would be glad the week is over, finishing as he did tied 66th. Ian McKinley had begun the event poorly and he ended it in the same vein, carding a 78 today to conclude the tourney sharing 24th spot, an admirable effort. Charlie Roberts was one of only three players to complete the event under par, his 74 today rewarding him with 3rd place, a commendable performance.

And so to the co-leaders going into the final round. Mark Lipping produced a late surge towards the end of his round to post a 71, a very good score considering the hostile conditions. Unfortunately for Mark, Tony Jacklin went one better with a 70, his third of the week, and that was good enough to clinch the US Open Championship!
