Round 4 - There was a close finish today, but first the news about the also-rans. Roger Instell signed off with a 91 - enough said. Bob Fletcher had to battle for a 77 and would be glad the week is over, finishing as he did tied 66th. Ian McKinley had begun the event poorly and he ended it in the same vein, carding a 78 today to conclude the tourney sharing 24th spot, an admirable effort. Charlie Roberts was one of only three players to complete the event under par, his 74 today rewarding him with 3rd place, a commendable performance. And so to the co-leaders going into the final round. Mark Lipping produced a late surge towards the end of his round to post a 71, a very good score considering the hostile conditions. Unfortunately for Mark, Tony Jacklin went one better with a 70, his third of the week, and that was good enough to clinch the US Open Championship!
