Round 1 - Quail Hollow is one of my favourite courses, which may well mean I'm a masochist because it can provide a lot of pain if you don't play well. Even though the opening day conditions were not too bad, the course still played tough. Nate Arteezy struggled back to the clubhouse with a 75, while Ian McKinley shouldn't be too unhappy with his 72. Sneaking under par with a brace of 71's were Mark Lipping and the returning Charlie Roberts, while Bob Fletcher displayed unusual control with his shots and was rewarded with a 69, just 3 strokes off the pace.
Round 2 - Stronger wind and rain met the players at the course today, generally making it longer and more difficult. That was especially true for Ian McKinley who could only scrape together a 77, a score which was to give him a share of last place with Nate Arteezy who managed a 74. Mark Lipping's 73 resulted in him being in a tie for 44th, while Charlie Roberts improved on his opening round by a stroke, carding a 70 for a share of 19th. Bob Fletcher also shot better today, a hard-earned 68 rewarding him with 3rd spot, level with PGA pro Lionel Hebert, and just two strokes behind halfway leader Lou Graham. I think an interesting weekend is in store...
Round 3 - Very high winds had to be negotiated today, so low scoring looked unlikely. Nate Arteezy dragged himself off the bottom of the leaderboard with a creditable 72, as did Ian McKinley who played even better for a praiseworthy 69. One stroke ahead of Ian, tied 53rd, is Mark Lipping who repeated his second round score of 73. Charlie Roberts sneaked under par with his second 71 of the event and he looks set for a decent finish, tied 19th and just six shots behind the joint leaders. One of those leaders is PGA pro Lou Graham who matched Charlie's 71, and the other is Bob Fletcher who surprised himself with his second 69 of the week. So it all comes down to the final round, and Bob has a great opportunity to record his first tournament win of the 1970 season...
Round 4 - A few weeks ago at Augusta in The Masters Bob Fletcher had a golden chance to claim his first ever tour win, but he succumbed to the immense pressure on the 18th green and threw the chance away. This week he made no such mistake. Joint leader after three rounds, today he fired his third 69 of the week to finish three clear of tour pro Dick Lotz. Bob was one of only two players to shoot under par in all four rounds, the other being Dan Sikes Junior who finished tied 7th. The next best-placed 'guest' player was Charlie Roberts whose 72 today provided him with a share of 17th place. Ian McKinley concluded the event with a 73, finishing disappointingly in a tie for 63rd. Mark Lipping's closing 75 was his worst round of the tourney, and he ended up in a lowly tie for 78th.
