Round 1PGA Tour pro Gary Player leads the way after his opening 68, but none of the 'guest' players could break par today. Bob Fletcher fell foul of the wild weather and his 80 has virtually destroyed any winning hopes he may have had. Tour money leader Mark Lipping stumbled in with a 76, Ian McKinley could only shoot a 74, while Randy Grant and Nate Arteezy managed a pair of 73's to keep their interests alive...

Round 2Frank Beard has taken over at the head of the leaderboard courtesy of an extraordinary round of 64, giving him a 3-stroke lead over his nearest challenger, Tony Jacklin. The best positioned 'guest' player is Ian McKinley at level par after a hard-working 70 today, but he'll have to work even harder if he is to bridge the 10-shot deficit over the weekend. The returning Hans Kunok matched Ian's 70 to improve on his opening 76, and Randy Grant finds himself in a tie for 25th after carding a 74 today. Nate Arteezy's 76 leaves him in sole possession of 30th spot, just one stroke ahead of Mark Lipping who recorded a 74. Bob Fletcher is finding La Costa difficult to handle and his 76 means he now shares last place with Don January. It's beginning to look as if the guest players will come away empty handed this week, but we shall soon see...

Round 3With one round left to play Frank Beard still leads from Tony Jacklin but now only by 2 strokes. Ian McKinley hit a fighting 67, the joint best round of the day with Jacklin, to elevate himself to a share of 6th place with Arnold Palmer, but being 9 shots off the pace makes a win very unlikely. Hans Kunok fought back to level par with his second succesive 70, and 2 strokes adrift of Hans is the ever-improving Randy Grant whose 71 today earned him a share of 17th place. Mark Lipping (72) and Nate Arteezy (73) are both having a tournament to forget and they are now tied 30th. Bob Fletcher's 72 means he is no longer sharing last place with Don January, whose 75 leaves him at rock bottom...

Round 4 The 'guest' players came away empty handed for the 4th time this season, with Ian McKinley performing very well to finish with a 69 to earn a tie for 2nd place, a full 7 strokes behind the eventual winner. Hans Kunok (73) and Randy Grant (71) ended the event sharing 14th spot, a respectable effort, while Nate Arteezy concluded the tourney with a 75 to finish 30th. Bob Fletcher's best round of the week, a 70, saw him one shot further back in a tie for 31st, and Mark Lipping, the tour's leading money winner, slumped to a 78 and a disappointing share of 34th. The winner was Frank Beard who actually also won this event back in 1967, but the springboard to victory this year was his second round - a 64, easily the best of the week, with nine birds. In scoring the 64, Beard used 12 putts on each nine, and for the round he was 12 under par on the greens. He commented "I wasn't thinking about anything after the first six birdies. Under those circumstances you just hit the ball, find it and hit it again. It charges you up. Everything seems automatic. I know I'm a good putter, but even I find this display hard to believe."Frank Beard
